"Flies on the edge of the night: combining morphology and molecules to study the impact of the light pollution on non-biting midges (Diptera, Chironomidae)"
Light pollution is a serious threat disrupting natural communities around the world and contributing to the global insect decline. With unique material collected in one of the European Dark Skies reserves in Brandenburg we hope to understand how the light pollution impacts the populations and diversity of the crucial ecosystem engineers -non-biting midges. We are looking for students with interest in biodiversity, global ecosystem changes and molecular ecology to help us with sorting, mounting, and preparing the insect material for DNA-barcoding in frames of GBOL III, “Dark taxa” project. Possibilities for multiple Bsc projects exist.
